The National Institute of Ophthalmic Science (NIOS) formerly known as the National Institute of Ophthalmology, the academic arm of the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (Thoneh), was established under the auspices of the hospital to provide quality education and undertake research work. Its vision is to promote excellence in the sphere of continuing medical education and make available better eye care in Malaysia and the neighbouring countries.
Under NIOS, the School of Optometry is currently offering a specially designed 4+0 year program, Bachelor of Science in Optometry (B.S. Optometry) in collaboration with The Birla Institute of Technology & Science- Pilani, India (BITS-Pilani). The four year course will be conducted entirely in the NIOS and Thoneh premises at Lorong Utara B, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Global demographic trends have made optometry one of the largest independent healthcare professions. It offers a variety of areas in specialization to serve the community in identifying and treating preventable blindness. The institute’s mission is to create a pool of competent and self reliant optometrists who can do more than just prescribe glasses and lenses. Bring in the frontline of eye care, they can avert eye diseases and create public awareness on matters of vision.
The B.S Optometry degree program is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) ref number (A7179). This course offers the ‘Only Integrated Hospital based Programme with direct patient care in Malaysia’. Students will be exposed to state of the art equipment and the clinical facilities of the Thoneh. The entry requirements for this program are STPM, A-level or its equivalent qualification.
