Since University of Malaya (UM) in Malaysia was conferred the self accrediting statues by the Ministry of Higher Education in May 2010, University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed) has taken the step to obtain accreditation for all its executive diploma programs in stages. To begin, four Executive Diploma programs have acquired provisional accreditation and will be offered for the October 2012 intake. The program offered are Executive Diploma in Management with three specializations: Administration and Operations, Human Resource, and Business. Besides management, UMCCed will also offer Executive Diploma in Early Childhood Education.
With this self accrediting status, the programs offered are placed at the same level as the Diploma, specifically Level 4 in the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). According to Professor Dr. Bernardine Renaldo Wong, the Director of UMCCed, “The accreditation of executive diploma programs is an initiative from the government particularly MOHE for all working individuals to encourage them to improve their standard of living through lifelong education.”
In these programs, individuals with a minimum of three years of working experience will receive a 30% exemption from the overall total credit hours prescribed for the diploma level. This reduces the duration of study if compared with the common diploma program offered to school leavers.
He also stated that the program accreditation also affords opportunities to public servants to join in enhancing their career through programs which will soon be offered. This will indirectly provide balance in program participation as the majority now comprise employees from the private sectors. To ensure that all programs offered continue to be relevant and fulfill the needs of the job market, UMCCed will also emphasize on balance between the understanding of theory, concepts and practical aspects in preparing the program contents and teaching methods. In addition, the teaching force includes professionals with vast experience in the field of work or industry.
For the purpose of encouraging more working individuals to advance their studies, all programs are offered on a part time basis whereby classes are held during weekends only.
